Kliph Nesteroff's "The Comedians" is an invaluable historic document, chronicling the evolution of comedy - mostly standup - over the past several decades. It is not a dry encyclopedic rendering of a list of comedians; nor does Nesteroff expound on one form of comedy over another. It is a straightforward compilation of facts mingled with interviews Nesteroff conducted himself of many well-known comics and some lesser known or even forgotten ones on his blog, [...].Nesteroff maintains his impartiality throughout - at the end, I was hard-pressed to say who his favorite comic of all time might be. That's because while the book mentions household names such as Bob Hope, Jack Benny, George Burns, George Carlin and others, he also gives equal time to more obscure comics such as B.S. Pully, Jean Carroll, Sammy Shore and others. This is the type of book which, when you are finished, you won't put it back on your bookshelf and forget about it. You'll want to leave it readily available to flip through to re-read certain passages. I had a difficult time, as I read it straight through, to avoid skipping ahead or checking the index for any information on comedians which popped into my head as I was reading it.I highly recommend it for any student of comedy -- whether amateur or professional.

*Please Read*: An Amazing book - and not exactly what I expected. I'd actually like to Rate this at 4.2 Stars. I'd give 5-Stars - but Being a Huge fan of Steven Wright, Emo Philips & Henny Youngman - there's barely a mention of them - yet time to write about Dane Cook (Yuck!) and 'Andrew Dice' (Yuck! Yuck!!). I expected this book to cover like the 1960's & 1970's - but it goes all the way back to the Vaudeville days!! I'd was 80% more detailed and interesting than I would have guessed. I took 47 pages of notes (for my own reference)!! Too much for me to even summarize here. I can't even begin to imagine all the research and information Kliph did and covered to make this book. I would put this - for a Comedian and/or Fan of Comedy - as a 'Must Read'!!(Today is 8-7-2017) and a month ago I was blessed to open for Gilbert Gottfried and I bought him a copy of this book as a gift to him, and an ice breaker for meeting him. Before I could hand it to him - I was hinting around about it - and He named the book title & author. And said he already devoted one of his podcasts to this book!*(Note) I know comedy is an art form and subjective - but - I'm so Sick & Tired of Bad language & Offensive words & behaviors by comics. For example George Carlin - and Genius - yet I wished he did all his sets 100% clean. I have mixed thoughts & feelings when I hear his comedy.*This book was written in Mostly good taste - with 'bad words' kept to a minimum.Amazing all the craziness - dysfunctions and tradgity in the history of comedy!! This book is a real eye-opener!! Scott M.

I enjoyed ready no this, but I think there were a few flaws.First, the author obviously did a tremendous amount of research which is great, however, sometimes the chapters just went on and on and on. I found myself skimming a few chapters.Second, it seemed at times as if the author didn't give credit to certain comics or comic teams. There was a decent amount written about Martin and Lewis, but. Rey little about Abbott and Costello. So I think the chapters that seemed to drone on might have been more interesting if there was more information about more comics. That being said, there were a number of chapters I really enjoyed.

This is a marvelous work written in a highly-engaging manner. Considering it as a well-written reference book would be close to the mark. In many ways it could be viewed as a textbook on the topic of comedians and comedy and many reviewers have already pointed this out. It brought back memories and filled in some gaps in my recollections being I was extremely young when my path crossed some individuals named here.My mother moved to Los Angeles about 1926 and my father about 1931. She worked at Paramount studios for a number of years and, given the dynamics of the African American community of Los Angeles at the time, was well acquainted with many of the individuals discussed and profiled. The mention of Jester Hairston was especially fond to my mind as I remembered Uncle Jester would give me a dollar when he would see me in my parents' company. I mentioned Uncle Jester because this book provided a bit of information of which I was unaware. Although the original Amos and Andy players were white, their supporting staff was entirely black. This book provides the best overview of black comedy I've seen or heard of. As my parents were well acquainted with the cast members of the later Amos and Andy TV series, although I was a munchkin at the time I remembered enough to fill in some of the gaps in the book's narratives of black stars. So the book is worthy of purchase and I fully intend to reread it before long. Some items left me bewildered. Jeff Foxworthy received one mention: One. There were no mentions of the Blue Collar crowd which I found mystifying. The book did a marvelous job discussing the dilemmas of comedians after the September 11 disasters who were unsure and hesitant how to incorporate these horrible occurrences into their realms and routines. A glance at the copyright date (2015) indicates the author had to have been cognizant of the brilliant work of Jeff Dunham and his surrogate Achmed The Dead Terrorist whose strident Silence! I! Keeeel! You! reduced audiences to tears.Otherwise, this book is a first-rate outing which will be of special interest to those who love to read social and cultural history and get some marvelous insights along the way.

I don't like leaving negative feedback but in the case of items like this, I feel the need to warn others who might spend $10 on this book. There really is no direction and the stories jump around without any flow whatsoever. That wouldn't be enough for me to drop it to one star but there is one that that is... I'm not sure that the book was ever edited. I stopped counting the errors eventually after realizing I couldn't keep track. Simple errors that any small amount of effort would have caught (spelling, grammar, spacing errors, every kind possible).I won't complain if someone tries and puts forth their best effort but this book just screams laziness. Please please please don't take our money if you're not going to bother giving us a good product.

This was a gift, and as a die-hard Vikings fan, the recipient was very pleased. He was impressed that the information was so current and rated it thumbs up for sure.

Good book for Vikings fans

My son loved this book.

10 year old Minnesota grandson loved it!REal fan and loved the background infoabout today's team. True purple and gold fan!

This book had a lot great story but sometimes it could get a little boring but over all 6 stars

Rating:2 of 5 stars (not so great)Review:As a longtime Minnesota Vikings fan, I am always on the lookout for books on the team, especially those that would have good stories on the great Viking teams of the 1970’s. I was able to obtain a copy of this book, but I was sorely disappointed with it. A collection of the “greatest” Vikings stories ever is a stretch, to put it kindly. Most of the stories could be written by most fans with either long memories or a little research. Not all of them are bad – some are downright entertaining, such as Bob Lurtsema’s party habits during training camp or some of the Randy Moss antics. But overall, the stories about the great players for the Vikings during the entire history of the team are very short and not very entertaining. They come mostly from other people’s recollection of them, such as coaches or teammates. This does a disservice to great players of the team’s history. How does a Hall of Fame player like Carl Eller get only a short six-paragraph mention lumped in with other defensive linemen? There are also several editing errors or typos that could easily be caught but somehow made it into the final copy. One example is a 2001 story on Ron Yary that mentions a grass roots campaign led by then-owner Red McCombs “who both the team three years age.” Another example is when talking about defensive lineman John Randle, a play “just con apses on John.” Huh? Collapses? The stories and chapters, such as the one on the death of Korey Stringer, seem very choppy and there are either abrupt endings to short stories or confusing breaks in longer ones. There is not a good flow for continuous reading, nor are many good stopping points for those who like to read just a few pieces at a time. It just feels like the book was quickly put together in a rush to beat a deadline. This is how I felt for both the main section of the book which was published in 2004, and the extra chapter added in 2012 for the 2005 to 2010 seasons. I could not get into a good rhythm for reading, which in turn decreased my enjoyment of the book.Did I skim?NoPace of the book:This was a quick read, but because of the poor editing and sudden breaks in the stories, I had to stop every now and then to get back on track.Do I recommend?Fellow Vikings fans may enjoy some of these tales, especially those with old time players like Bob Lurtsema and Bill Brown. However, I don’t recommend this book for those strolls down memory lane as there are books with more complete stories.

Review

Buckland's tour through the essentials of information handling―also because of its clear and mind-refreshing language―opens a new perspective on cyberlaw. The book invites us to take a step back from ever-changing technological characteristics, regulatory reactions, and accumulating caselaw and to take a fresh look at what all this is about, at how our societies create, handle, organize, share and restrict information and at how all this should be done considering our constitutional value systems―in short, to look at information law properly and then from there to discuss and evaluate the implications of technological change.―Herbert Burkert, Jotwell

Years and years ago, I audited a course on cataloguing (a review of its history) of Dr. Buckland's, at UC Berkeley. This book has some of his quality as a person; something I am particularly happy to be able to remember this way.

Great overview; I am coming at this from a computer science perspective. The writing is clear and concise with some new ideas I haven't seen articulated in information retrieval, information theory, or library science that I have read (sociologists may be familiar with the ideas here already). The bibliography has many points to jump, and a nice set of notes in the back. I took many pages of notes while reading and expect this to be useful in my work.If you're interested in information from any variety of angles, this is a good investment.

Anthropocene Fictions: The Novel in a Time of Climate Change (Under the Sign of Nature), by Adam Trexler

Review

As an extremely timely contribution to the urgent discussions of climate change and culture in the Anthropocene, Anthropocene Fictions deserves high praise for carefully documenting the longer history of climate change novels as well as projecting forward into the uncertain futures of postapocalyptic writings. Trexler’s provocative theory of 'eco-nomics,' or the inextricably intertwined aspects of ecological and economic choices made in our industrial cultures as we navigate rising waters and rising costs in the twenty-first century, is one with wide relevance for anyone interested in the cultural impact of global environmental change. (Heather I. Sullivan, Trinity University, author of The Cambridge Introduction to Literature and the Environment)With admirable thoroughness Adam Trexler has traced over 150 novels that are about climate change in one sense or another. He highlights the profound cultural shifts that are accompanying this phenomenon and underlines the novelty of the artistic challenges it represents for novelists. This result is an original and thoughtful book that must become an important reference point for future work in environmental criticism and in studies of the novel. (Timothy Clark, Durham University)Readers interested in ecoliterature will find this book a must read. (Choice)[A]n interesting and provocative look into the relationship between literary climate fiction and the changing global climate it describes.... Overall, Anthropocene Fictions provides important, critical insight into the relationship between fiction and science, with sufficient attention to its implications for how we think about climate change. (Journal of Cultural Geography)

Adam Trexler has single-handedly taken a monograph he published onlinefour years agoand turned it into perhaps the most important nonfiction book of 2015.No doubt , literary critics from the New York to Sydney will be arguing over this tome for months, years. This book is that important, that germane, that current. It looks at the issues and it pulls no punches. It's a scholarly look at sci-fi and cli fi books and how they deal with climate change issues, and it's the first time ever such a scholary book has hit the shelves running. The book's introduction section also tips its hat -- in one short, brief sentence -- to the cli-fi ''coinage'' and acknowledges its role in turning the American media on to climate-themed novels and movies in ways that sparked a small literary eruption that is still going strong. I found Trexler's entire discussion fascinating.
