I'll give you the bottom line up front: This is the best wrestling book ever written. If you're a fan at all, go buy it."Nitro" tells in great detail the story of WCW's rise to the top of the wrestling world in the mid-late 90s and their even more amazing crash and burn in 2000/01. Fueled by an amazing cast of stars, an innovative TV program (the "Nitro" from which the book gets its name), and tremendous storylines, WCW rose to amazing heights in in 1995-98. Their rise challenged the WWF to be better and wrestling fans, as a result of "The Monday Night Wars" were thrilled to multiple high-quality shows every week."Nitro" tells this story through the eyes of the people who were there. With over 120 exclusive interviews, Guy Evans paints a wonderfully detailed, complete picture of WCW - the wrestling itself, the TV show, the Turner network, and so on. We hear from Eric Bischoff, Kevin Nash, Kevin Sullivan and a whole host of production and behind-the-scenes folks. The focus here is on the big picture, not always the details of matches and what's actually going on in the ring for WCW. This is both good and bad. Occasionally, it feels like the wrestling gets short shrift but...that's what WCW did, too. They made the wrestling of secondary importance and lost their audience as a result. The plus side is that we get a lot more of the "other" details in WCW and that's where the fun stuff is - the backstage maneuvering, politicking, and dumb decision-making."Nitro" is 560+ pages of amazing. It flies by and you'll be left wanting for more. It's packed with details and tidbits that you probably didn't know going in and it's told in an easy, fast moving style.HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommended. I've read dozens of wrestling books and this one is tops among the crowd. It's fabulous.p.s As for the cover...Guy Evans did himself no favors. Using a blurry, poor quality photo of a wrestling move that's not even from the "Nitro" show - bad idea. Using a lame white block font for the title - bad idea. Not putting his own name on the cover - really bad idea. But don't judge this book by its cover!

This is an amazing book that would not have been possible to write just a few years ago. A publisher would have been scared away by a 550+ page book on the subject matter. This is obviously a passion project of the author, conducting over 120 interviews and extensive research. If you loved Death of WCW, this book is even more comprehensive.

There have been a great many books written about wrestling since Mick Foley first wrote Have A Nice Day in 1999, a few of them detailing the meteoric rise and equally impactful fall of World Championship Wrestling but none have done it in such detail as Nitro. Starting with the hiring of Eric Bischoff in 1993 going all the way to the last Nitro in 2001, Guy Evans writes on the highs and lows of WCW using interviews with WCW executives and wrestlers, Turner/TBS/TNT executives and management, as well as other pertinent individuals to give the reader a ground-level view not seen before. I am a huge fan of The Death of WCW; however, one would never mistake it for a work of pure impartiality. While The Death of WCW focuses entirely on the negatives that WCW produced with a major focus on humor, Nitro instead looks at the daily dealings of running a wrestling business in a corporate network structure with an aim on impartiality. Evans often juxtaposes interviews to show how an event might have looked for a wrestler on the payroll versus someone in the Turner corporate offices, which leaves the reader to sort out with might be the truth for an incident rather than telling you his own beliefs. Ultimately, Nitro has an eye for impartiality and detail that few if any other wrestling books care to delve into and does so without the need to inflate any egos or tear down any individuals. If you are interested in modern professional wrestling, especially the business side and doubly so for World Championship Wrestling, you owe it to yourself to pick up Nitro.

Like many wrestling fans, I have fond memories of the later 1990s. For me, WCW Monday Nitro was must-see TV, and I have missed watching since the program was cancelled in 2001. Other books have told the story of World Championship Wrestling and Nitro from the wrestlers’ perspective. Guy Evans took a very different take by looking at the Nitro story with a more corporate view. Evans interviewed wrestlers, WCW management, and members of the Turner Broadcasting hierarchy to put together a comprehensive account of how WCW and Monday Nitro grew and ultimate collapsed. The reader learns about the business side of WCW, the turf battles involved with getting wrestling promoted within Turner, and the forces both inside and outside of the company that led to its’ ultimate demise. I feel that Evans tells the story from a neutral standpoint, letting the reader decide what really happened to make WCW great...and then make it fail. If you are a fan of wrestling history and the inner workings of the wrestling business I think you will really enjoy this book.

I’m not going to even begin to tell you how great this book is. I read it as I’m on the way to work and while I was chilling on the beach and it’s one of those books you can’t put down. While im not complete with it yet,so far it’s the most thorough accounting of the in’s & out’s of a wrestling company that for some reason doesn’t get its just due. Eric Bischoff would be a great choice to lead a wrestling company today because he’s done it before and has learned a lot about what not to do and what needs to be done. A wrestling fan is going to enjoy this book tremendously

"...this book is a must have.." - Pixar Talk"offers a fun behind-the-scenes look at some of the most beloved Pixar films" -The Hollywood Reporter"There's nothing quite like watching a Pixar film in a theater alongside hundreds of fellow moviegoers. But taking your time with a book like The Art of Pixar is an unexpected and essential adjunct to the experience. It's a path through the minds of the artists, and as a result, a look inside at the characters, scenes, sets, and environments that shape the many movies that together form Pixar's enviable collection" -CNET"Pixar and Chronicle have prepared a jaw-dropping collection of colorscripts and other pieces from its productions in a brand new coffee-table book...that will look great in anyone's collection." -Upcoming Pixar blog"Both insightful and inspiring, The Art of Pixar would make an excellent addition to the library of painters, animators and storytellers." -Forces of Geek"A must-have for animation and illustration fans. Author Amid Amidi of Cartoon Brew has a solid track record, and even for their lesser films, these Pixar Art Of books, usually devoted to a single film, are always brimming with wonderful art. What sets this particular book apart is that it spans the studio's entire catalog and reproduces each film's colour script - a series of lush, colourful preliminary paintings that are to the emotion of an animated film what storyboards are to the action." -Drawn

#42,991 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

The Art of Pixar is a gorgeous book that represents the humble beginnings of an animation studio that is now loved by fans worldwide. The first colorscript was drawn by Ralph Eggleston for Toy Story. That was in 1993 and it had enchanted John Lasseter, Steve Jobs and the rest of the then little studio. Today, many years and films later, it's nice to see that Pixar is still creating them, using them to communicate the emotional arc of their stories.Collected within the 320 pages of this beautiful book are the colorscripts up to the latest movie Cars 2. Also included are the colorscripts for the many animated shorts that, if I'm not wrong, are all appearing in this book for the first time. The 100 over pages at the back are for selected pieces of art, one printed per page. These are the work from the last 25 years. It's quite cool to see the artistic styles used by different artists to create the colorscripts. I love the pastel ones by Ralph Eggleston and Dominique R. Louis. The vector style art of Lou Romano for The Incredibles is still a refreshing departure of usual style of drawing them with pastel. Later on, the colorscript slowly evolved to being drawn digitally. The ones by Sharon Calahan for Cars 2 are so detailed I'm not sure if they aren't film stills. The book claims to have the complete colorscripts but that's not exactly true. Since I have the other Pixar art books published by Chronicle Books, I went back to compare the content. I found out that the book didn't include some of the colorscripts that were featured in the earlier art books. Some from The Art of Finding Nemo weren't included. However, this book includes a lot of new colorscripts that aren't in the earlier books. In particular, there are many more extra pages of colorscripts for Cars and Cars 2. The colorscripts for Ratatouille in this book are not even in The Art of Ratatouille. As for the selected pieces of art, many are from earlier art books. I guess there some are new pieces but I didn't do a detail comparison. Even if there are some duplication, you'll still want the book because of the colorscripts, all conveniently collected and beautifully laid out.The Art of Pixar is a tribute to art, animation and the amazing people working at Pixar. It's an inspiring book authored by veteran animation writer Amid Amidi. Highly recommended.(There are more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

The book is amazing but when I got it in the mail it had a pretty decent dent on the top part and there were small dance and scuffs and dents on the book itself even that was supposed to be brand new. Quite disappointed since I like making sure all the brand new things I buy look and stay looking now.

Great art of book. Interesting look into character design and layout of several Pixar productions. Lots of characters a number of sketches, etc. All well done and most quite interesting. I initially didn't think I would be interested in the several pages containing animation cell scripts of the movies highlighted, but there actually enjoyable as well. Overall, I found this book to be a great reference and fun behind the scenes look at Pixar. A worthy library add.

Absolutely beautiful! My husband & I just had a tour @ Pixar and saw a couple of these displayed on walls there. We loved them, and when I surprised my husband with this book it brought back the magic of our tour! He sat & studied half the book right after opening it! The images are neat but seeing the mood of the entire story arch without the details is very cool! It shows you how well they capture emotion & mood with color & how close to the original plan the movie hits!

If you are a lover of animation or art in general, this book will delight you. Taken from the first 25 years of Pixar, you are awarded with so many amazing illustrations and prep art from such classics as Toy Story and Nemo and Monster's Inc. Definitely fun to see where the artists original visions transcended into the actual animation that made each of these classics in modern animation. Great coffee table book. Definitely worth the meager price.Dig It!

What an excellent book! For those of you who enjoy the work of Pixar, this will be a treasured possession. Very high quality publication

This book contains work in progress images, pastel renderings, and beautiful insight into what made the Pixar movies. It is a behind the scenes look, so expect the images to look different from the final animation. I personally love peering into the creative process that brought these movies to fruition. It starts with Toy Story and stops at Cars 2, 2010.

Love 💕 great book. Awesome!!!a must read for all. Keep writing more. We live this so very much!! Can’t wait for more to come!

Yes, I hate it. It's just such a bad guidebook and almost unreadable in its hipster pretentiousness. Yes, the word "hip" appears repeatedly throughout the book, along with appearances of "mega-hip," "gob-smacked," and "cred." If you consider yourself a hipster, I suppose you might find the book useful; for all others, there are better options. The information is brief and, as I know from past trips, can steer readers the wrong way. If all you want to do is skip across Eastern Europe's most popular tourist destinations and visit "hip" cafes and clubs, this may be your book. If you want to see the best art museum in Zagreb, it's not in this book. If you want to sleep through one of the most scenic train rides in Europe (Bar to Belgrade), that's exactly what this guidebook advises you to do ("take the night train"). Amazingly, one of the author bios at the end of the book states that while he writes for Lonely Planet guides, he "finds real satisfaction in digging up stories in places that are too remote or quirky for the guides." Once upon a time, that was Lonely Planet's aim--to share that information with readers. At least with this guide, it seems the aim has changed to sending readers to all the popular places and keeping the gems to themselves. Honestly, you will find much more useful information through online search engines and Youtube videos. Please note that one common complaint of the previous guide was that information was incorrect or out of date and had been for some time before the guide was published. Potential buyers should also note the page count: At 480 pages, this guide is shockingly small for half a continent. For comparison, Lonely Planet's guide to Italy is 976 pages, and Rick Steves' Eastern Europe guide is 1100 pages.

I preordered this book and looked forward to its arrival. I'm sorry to say that I found it very disappointing. The first thing that struck me was how slim it is. I had recently bought Lonely Planet's Southeast Asia on a Shoestring (2016), which dedicates over 970 pages to 11 countries. This book has about 480 pages for 21 countries. So roughly half the number of pages for about twice as many countries. I compared the coverage of Russia, the largest country in the world, with the other book's coverage of Singapore, a tiny city-state. Russia got 25 pages; Singapore had 33.There is a jarring disjunct between the labelled maps and the sights described in the text. For just one example, the entry on Kyiv describes a grand total of 5 sights under 4 headings (p. 413). Kyevo-Pecherska Lavra, St. Sophia's Cathedral, and Maidan Nezalezhnosti each get a single paragraph, while another is split between Andriyivsky Uzviz and St. Andrew's Church. Meanwhile, the map of central Kyiv (pp. 416–417) and its key (p. 418) show 9 marked sights. Five of these — The Bulgokov Museum, Desyatynna Church Ruins, Museum of One Street, National Museum of Ukrainian History, and Peyzazhna Alleya — get absolutely no description. This book cannot stand on its own. Almost anything in here that interests you must be supplemented by information found elsewhere. There are other weird choices. The introduction to Albania (p. 42) has an oddly vicious tone: "So backward was Albania when it emerged blinking into the bright light of freedom that it needed two decades just to catch up with the rest of Eastern Europe." Yikes. The map of Croatia (p. 110–111) would be helped by the addition of ferry routes, since the country's coast is an archipelago. I don't know what typographical gremlin is responsible for the spacing disaster on the key to Tallinn's map (p. 167), but it should have been exorcised before going to print. And although published at the end of 2017, the authors seem unaware of AirBnb. I know that some European cities are fiercely opposed to the platform, and some tourists avoid using it in those places — I don't know what the situation is in any of the cities described here. I appreciate the handful of hostels and hotels listed for each location, but I fear that the company whose finger was once firmly on the young traveler's pulse has put on some very thick mittens. One final gripe: the Amazon description touts "Colour maps and images throughout." Not exactly. As is common with Lonely Planet guides, all of the photos are found in the book's very first section, and the maps are "colour" only in the most technical of terms. They're blue. After page 40, blue and black are the only inks used. I don't mind this at all — it's typical of many guide books — but the description on the site is misleading. This book would make a good gift for a luddite looking for a superficial glance at a bunch of cool places, but for the rest of us, a few cursory online searches will turn up more information for a much lower cost. I really wanted to love this book, and I feel guilty leaving such a harsh review, but I waited for it for months, and it is so frustrating as to be almost useless.

I only give this book a 1 star because you can not give it anything lower. I am a long time Lonely Planet user, and I am REALLY DISAPPOINTED in them and this book. It is just SO SMALL and is completely USELESS! There is absolutely no reason to buy it at all. You should get anything else, because it has to be better than this book!

Far too short to cover such a region. LP Caribbean or Central America are twice the size. This is a pocket book with each country's capital, largest church, national museum, 2 restaurants and 2 hotels and that is it.

The review above by "Go" says it all. I too am fed up with the relentless "hipster" bent of this book and some other Lonely Planet titles Namely their Bulgaria and Romania guide which suffers from the same problems. An overwhelming bias towards Hostels over Hotels, Vegan and vegetarian over all other food and the "party" culture of travel over important cultural and historic sites and events has diminished LP greatly in my view. Some important balance needs to be restored. I bought my first LP guide in the mid 1970's before my tour of duty in the Peace Corps. Their Africa book was thin, all drawings were hand drawn, no photographs (Even the Red cover was hand drawn). But all in all that was a better book than this one. I have been a loyal buyer, user and reader of LP guides for more than 40 years...from the very beginning. So I do have some perspective on this. I must say that with the sale of LP By Tony and Maureen to the BBC LP guides like Eastern Europe and Bulgaria and Romania have gone completely downhill.

Looks good. Covers southern Eastern Europe - Kosovo, Macedonia, etc.- an area that is missing from the Rick Steve's guide to Eastern Europe.

I did not think there would be much information, but holy cow, this book is worthless. Only about 7 pages per country. Its not enough to be worthy to be taken with. Most cities I want to travel to don't have any information whatsoever.

too general
