Drawing on Tradition: Manga, Anime, and Religion in Contemporary Japan, by Jolyon Baraka Thomas

Review

Drawing on Tradition is not only an entertaining look at religion and Japanese society, easily accessible to non-specialists, but is also informative and thought-provoking for academics, with a nuanced analysis of religion and popular culture in Japan today. The author skillfully ‘plays’ with his subject matter―anime, manga, religion, tradition―to weave an insightful narrative on Japan and beyond. Author: Paul L. Swanson, editor, Japanese Journal of Religious Studies

I ordered this online and the only thing that was not enjoyable was the fact that there were no page numbers in the text.

Well-written book about manga, anime and religion in Japan! Thomas talks about manga and anime as mediums and also how media can affect people and how media reflects religious views and ideas.

Wonderful book for the academic as well as the everyday, curious reader!

Feminists Who Changed America, 1963-1975

From Booklist

This is the first comprehensive directory to document many of the founders and leaders of what is now often referred to as the second wave of feminism, between 1963 and 1975. It includes biographical sketches of about 2,200 individuals, mostly women, who reignited the women's movement of the early twentieth century and managed to make permanent changes in customs and laws. The biographical sketches represent many factions, all parts of the country, all races and ethnicities, and many political ideologies. Editor Love has worked as an editor, writer, and journalist, and she is currently on the board of the Veteran Feminists of America (VFA), a nonprofit organization for veterans of the second wave of the feminist movement. Alphabetically arranged, each entry includes a brief description of the role the person played in the movement. Entries include such diverse persons as authors, members of rock bands like Deadly Nightshade, sociologists, politicians, NOW leaders, and cartoonists. Much of the information was supplied by the subjects themselves, and all biographies were sent to the subjects for approval. There are a small number of black-and-white photographs in the center of the book; the only thing that could have made the book better would have been pictures of all the people included. The name index at the end of the volume includes not just the names of the people profiled in the sketches but also other people mentioned in those sketches. Although numerous other works cover individuals who were active in the movement, there does not appear to be any other work that chronicles so many of the people who were active over this course of time. Significant Contemporary American Feminists: A Biographical Sourcebook (Greenwood, 1999) offers a small sampling of the women in the current volume. Well written and easy to use, this encyclopedia is recommended for all academic libraries and large public libraries; there really is no other publication with the same scope. Buyer Beware! You are about to fall in love with a feminist. Turn the page and another will become irresistible. Feminists Who Changed America, 1963 - 1975 will change YOU. This is a dazzling compendium of over 2,000 biographies; elegant, short, profound and inspiring. Unlike the lost legacies of many First Wave feminists, the stories of these Second Wave feminists will be preserved forever in this collated, verified and beautifully presented book. In addition, each feminist's archive site is indicated. The three year creative process began with identifying and locating feminists who were active 1963 ~ 1975. They (or their heirs) were sent questionnaires and their responses were transformed into short bios. You can be certain of the veracity of the information here but don't think for a moment that it is dry or exclusively academic. With each biography you will fall in love with a feminist who was a first; first lawmaker, first professor, first publisher, first judge, first member in a legislature, first to march, first to open women's health clinic. In this reading you will read and feel how these brief years paved every road for women in America and, thus, women in the world. It is rich as cheesecake, a bite everyday is delectable.

Amazing how many wonderful women have gone before us and paved the way!

Paints one of the best pictures of the US cultural revolution

Fantastic resource, so well done it ought to be in every library and arcihve having to do with women and far beyond, as an essential part of the collection. The author has done a very good job of including some amazing women you have probably heard of and many more. You are may know the accomplishments of many women in this book without knowing who was responsible for them. This is the best collection of it's kind that I have seen. It make sense though that a woman who was so important and crucial to the Feminist movement is the author. I guess It takes one to know one and she really does.

This book is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in learning about the courageous and forward thinking feminists of the Second Wave. Great as a reference but then hard to put down!

This is an amazing book listing thousands of women who actually did change America. In both small and large ways we are closer to equality because of them, although we still have a way to go. We still don't have a national Equal Rights Amendment yet, nor do we see womens' pay as equal to mens, but we're not giving up.Thank you, Barbara Love!Chase

I guess I already know more about diabetes than I thought and was hoping for some newer info. The approach of this book was bit off putting to me. I purchased 3 books on the subject of pre-diabetes and this one was not my favorite. Just my opinion and I encourage you to decide for yourself. I preferred the The everything guide to managing and reversing pre-diabetes. Again, just a personal choice. An easy read and recipes that were interesting and new to me. Best wishes for good health to all!

I was diagnosed with Polycycstic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) when I was a slim 14-year-old. By the time I was 35 and had two sets of twins, I weighed over 250 pounds, and I needed help. I tried Nutri-system, South Beach, Weight Watchers (twice), the body type diet and Atkins, and nothing worked for my body. Finally, a friend with PCOS told me she was having success with this book, and it was basically the answer to my prayers.I actually really hate the cover of this book, because it’s so marketing-centric with it’s “Fat Making Machine” and the choice of the word “diet.” But diets, to me, are systems of eating that are temporary. This is not really a diet; it’s a guide for learning to balance any food so you can eat for the rest of your life.Basically, this is the insulin resistance bible. The Insulin Resistance Diet explains why it’s necessary to eat protein with carbohydrates and what amounts work best for balance. It also explains which kinds of foods will spike a blood sugar response and how to avoid that so that you can continue to eat from all the food groups in a healthy way. It’s about learning how to pair foods–any foods you want–in a way that won’t make you feel sick or store them as fat. Yes, there are recipes (I didn't use them much, but they're there), but really, this book is about learning how to eat and adapt any recipe you want for the rest of your life. 90 pounds later, I can definitely say this book is worth the money.

I have PCOS with Insulin Resistance. My weight had gotten out of control and I had no idea what to do. I heard about The Insulin Resistance Diet from other women with PCOS, so I decided to give it a try. I have found this way of eating to be extremely easy to follow, easy to stick to, and I've lost over 30 pounds in 2 months. I'll definitely be sticking with the Insulin Resistance Diet

I bought this book in 2010 when my Dr. told me I was pre-diabetic. I do not have diabetes, 7 years later. This solid advice works in preventing diabetes, a completely preventable disaster.

Getting older and fatter. I have tried low carb, Weight Watchers. exercise, my doctor's diet, Adkins. hyper exercise 30 day diets. pre cooked food diets and on and on. If i try very hard count my calories to 800 and exercise i might loose 10 lbs over time. The minute i eat or drink anything not on the diet I gain 2 lbs that day. I end up fatter than when I started. Now with this program I lost 4 lbs the first week without trying. I study a lot so exercise is minimal. I have all my life needed more sleep than the average person. I sleep soundly at night and need a 30 min nap every day. MOT ANY MORE! This program has changed my sleep pattern in one week. I do not nap and I stay up until 11 pm every night. THANK YOU FOR THIS BOOK!

I'm so disappointed in this book and the way it almost misguided me in my journey to treat my insulin resistance/PCOS. The book is founded on the completely false idea that protein causes no insulin response, so you should eat a lot of it. In fact, high protein no-carb foods like eggs, meat and ESPECIALLY the skim dairy recommended so much in this book, all measure very high on the insulin index. Some foods, like cheese, and steak, cause an insulin spike as big as that of white bread! No-glucose-spike does NOT mean no-insulin-spike, and this is a big problem for someone who already produces excess insulin after every meal and has hormone problems because of it. There are many studies on this - please research for yourself. Was this information not available when the book was written? I'm so sad because initially I was so excited about the idea this book proposed of finding a way I can still eat foods I love and get away with it. I'm glad I did more reading on my own before I caused more damage to my health.

This is a great buy! I've hit the 50 mark and things are moving along as they were in my 20's! I started carrying more around my middle than is necessary. I ordered this book and followed the breakdown of how to blend protein, fat and carbs and am down 15lbs! Mostly around my mid-section. I plan to continue the guides outlined here and incorporate more exercise (just ordered a Fitbit Flex 2) and will hopefully be able to work off another 10-20lbs over the next few months. For me, this was definitely worth the purchase price.

It is not an empty bookIt really makes you understand what insulin resistance and metabolic balance is.And what to doFor my opinion,Best part was about supplements

Shamefully marketed as a fad diet. This is a solid, research and clinically based approach to preventing and managing type 2 diabetes. And seems to be helping with cholesterol management as well (too early to say for sure).

Omg, so glad to have discovered this super talented scary smart author. She reminds me of a friend, who should be scared/proud/ flattered. I am a 66 year old snowflake and much of this is "young folks stuff" but damn if I don't relate on so many levels.Buy this book if you want to laugh and maybe a little demonic chuckle.

Yet again, Samantha gives me life while taking my breath away. Not in, like, enlightened gasps--sorry if that's what you thought I meant. More like public guffaws that either made passerby run away from the crazed lady reading a bright yellow book in public with unabashed joy, or slow their pace and lean in to read the title in my chortle-shaking hands.Yes, like Irby I'm a member of the DPC (Dead Parent Club) and DCC (Dysfunctional Childhood Club) and am the last of many kids from a blended family; a trifecta that often infuses both a dark sense of humor and a great appreciation for the little things in a person. But I don't think you need to have a similar history to understand how perfect these short stories are in explaining how a woman becomes who she is and the many faces of love along the way. She is frank about the raw rub of mental illness and physical ailments without begging pity, and tells tales that make you want to read everything else she ever scribbles. And did I mention how funny she is? Holy crap on a cracker, she is FUNNY.I love her blog bitches gotta eat. Her book Meaty was fantastic. But this is, in my opinion, the best Samantha has shared with us yet.

Yesterday at halfway through this book, I was a little disgusted. Not just the gory toileting details, which I could handle. But Ms. Irby tends to get very, very dark at times. I usually enjoy this brand of darkness, but repeated helpings of that can be, frankly, too much. I am really glad I persisted, though, because all in all this was a good read from a gifted writer. She has a very familiar and down to Earth style that feels very intimate. One minute I felt like we were kindred souls, the next minute I was shocked or repulsed. That is not necessarily a bad thing. It was definitely interesting, but I can see that this book would not be every person's cup of tea.

What an amazing collection of essays! Samantha Irby is now one of my favorite writers. Her wit and candor was refreshing and so funny. What struck me beyond the sentences that actually made me laugh out loud, was how honest all these essays are. Samantha had a lot that I relate to. A lot of her insecure paranoia was too reminiscent of my own life. From anxiety, depression, unrequited love, and weight-loss nothing is off topic. I laughed and cringed quite a bit, but that's what made this essay collection so funny and real. Samantha Irby is my new favorite writer.

We've been passing this funny and touching book of essays around the family. Yes, a book of essays is our current Must Read. Irby has persevered through some objectively pretty terrible experiences, and she's spun them into literary gold. Read this book just to discover the feelings and acts she admits to, that you may have done yourself, but can't believe she's actually writing about! Irby writes freely about her issues and problems, as if she doesn't fear judgement, and it works. By book's end you feel like you know her, she's your friend, and you'd stick up for her against her enemies.

Once again, I am lucky to have found a book that is so much MORE than I expected it to be. I thought I had found a collection of well-written and comedic essays. And while this book does fit those parameters, I also found wisdom, and honesty, and profound sadness, as well as the humor of a woman finding herself. This book made me laugh and weepy, but I am also inspired to be honest with myself and to want more for myself."I spent too much time trying to mold myself to fit the romantic ideals of humans who proved themselves unworthy of that effort, and I regret it. Never again will I be with someone who is unwilling to accept me as I am, or who has any desire to mold me into something that makes me uncomfortable."

This collection of eminently relatable essays held me spellbound. Samantha Irby writes with raw searing honesty and "heartbreaking hilarity." Her voice is unique yet showcases the similarities in so many of us willing to tell our most personal stories . Brilliant. it was hard to put this book down !

Memoirs have been my jam for the better part of a year now, and I’m so disappointed in myself for having put this particular one off for so long. Samantha Irby spares no nitty gritty detail when describing some of her most terrible (often-times hilarious) and very human experiences. She covers all of the super-relatable aspects of day-to-day life: toxic/oneway relationships, shitty parents, social anxiety, socioeconomic struggles, balancing work and freedom, and even shitting yourself just outside of your friend’s car, while stuck in traffic, after eating a 400 year old hamburger from McDonald’s (we’ve all been there). I’m a better person for having read this memoir. I promise, Samantha Irby, if I ever happen to see you in real life, I’ll make sure to admire you, inconspicuously, with actual heart emojis for eyes from a safe distance. Social anxiety is the pits, and I’d make myself anxious for probably making you anxious for having to speak to a stranger, and then you’ll pick up on my anxiety and I’ll pick up on you picking up on my anxiety and then the pit from Drag Me To Hell will open and— Us misanthropes gotta stick together. We are never meeting in real life.
