I bought both the course book and the practice book to work on a beginners course in English. It has very practical content, and is sequenced nicely to get the necessary basics in (eg- the alphabet) but, at the same time, not patronise students (the alphabet is given in the middle of "how to introduce yourself/spell your name")It CLAIMS to be a self-stufy book, but unfortunately, this concept doesn't work. Any beginner studying alone might need instructions in their first language from a BOOK (it's a different approach in the classroom). This book has somewhat complex instructions and lessons in English.I recommend it as a guide for teachers who have beginners, but not for the student themselves.

I have been trying to find a book to help my boyfriend (whose native language is Spanish) learn English for a long time, and I am so happy that I finally came across 'English for Everyone'.Pros:- It has a logical progression through content- It teaches you vocabulary on a certain topic, teaches you a grammar topic and then has exercises combining the vocabulary and the grammar- It includes reading, writing, speaking and listening- It has lots of pictures and is very visually attractiveCons:- The book claims to be 'a complete self-study program', but I don't feel that a beginner in English could fully understand the content without the help of someone that could explain this to them in their native language. It is perfect for beginners who have the support of a teacher, friend or family member.

I loved this book. I am a new ESL teacher and this has been a great guide for my classes, for I was clueless about what to teach or where to start. It has great, simple excercises, and very easily explained too. I also bought their Grammar book to make my teaching more complete.

I'm teaching a Mexican woman English and using this book. It has great pictures of vocabulary words, good teaching and practice exercises. It has attractive colors and presentation. Most importantly, my student likes the book. A great buy for anyone teaching or learning ESL.

Central character is a very intelligent and courageous tween girl who lives through dangerous adventures but ultimately has a HEA ending.GODDESS OF YESTERDAY is very well researched. Although it is aimed at the YA market, it is commendably frank regarding the horrors of war, slavery, rape, and human sacrifice in bronze age Greece. Accordingly I do not recommended it for readers less than high school age. Adults with an interest in Ancient Greece will also enjoy it.My only criticism - also shared by another reviewer - is that the character of Helen is very one dimensional. Why is she so evil?

This book was great. It didn't try to retell the Trojan War, but it did a great job of re-imagining what led up to it. It was full of detail. As a Classicist, I could appreciate the imagination that went into this. My only dislike was that Helen felt stereotypical and flat to me as a character, whereas the rest of the characters were so vibrant and real. However, a few factors could have contributed to the decision to write Helen that way, and in the end I chose to accept the author's choice here, not as wrong but simply as not my preferred representation of Helen.

This book is as much hagiography as it is history, personal reminiscences aside. it tells a great story and gives you a "you are there" feel. but given the fact that literary license was used proceed with caution.That said worth the read but not to be taken as history.

As a student of 20th century history I’ve read many WWII memoirs from soldiers of Russia, Germany and Americans during the war in Europe. In all my readings it became rather evident that the most brutal and savage fighting took place on the Eastern Front with the struggle of the Wehrmacht and the Red Army. I had conducted limited reading but mostly of naval battles of the war in the Pacific during this time period. In 1978 the author who is one of my all-time favorite writers of historical events went back to the battlefields where as a young Marine Sgt fought. In this very detailed reminiscent tour of his youthful past we find a young man who transformed from a young college student to a full-fledged man who had experienced combat in what I consider more brutal and savage than the Eastern Front. This is not a normal memoir when the storyteller only tells of his experiences. Manchester not only tells us the story, he gives a complete history lesson as to why certain islands were attacked and others were not. He tells us of leadership mistakes and how his fellow Marines reacted and proceeded forward to get the job done. In doing this history the author gives us further background to the native population and how those people are living currently upon his return visit. Also Manchester goes into his personal life during his experiences as a Marine. His attitudes and beliefs are molded by his personal experiences with women, fellow Marines, officers and above all how he viewed the enemy. His descriptive accounts of actual combat rival anything I’ve read about the brutal Eastern Front. Also the author describes that not only the enemy, who were more fanatical than any Russian fighting in the brutal winter climate, his descriptions of the unlivable conditions of the various jungles make the brutal winters seem like a ski vacation in comparison. In all after his last fought battle on Sugar Loaf Manchester comes to the following conclusion which I must say that sooner or later most combat veterans realize. In the following quote Manchester concludes the essence of all veterans, “So my feelings about Sugar Loaf were mixed. As I look back, it was somewhere on the slopes of that hill, where I confronted the dark underside of the battle, that passion died between me and the Marine Corps. The silver cord had been loosed, the golden bowl broken at the fountain, the wheel broken at the cistern.” Manchester realized that his pride in the Marines and his country was not what it was all about. The real reason as any combat veteran knows that his loyalty rested with his comrades at arms his fellow Marines who would do anything for him and that he would do anything for them. True loyalty is in the brotherhood of the men who fight with you.

I bought this book as a gift. I have my own copy that i re-read every year during the week of the Marine Corps Birthday. William Manchester is one of my favorite authors. I re-read his biography of Douglas MacArthur, "American Caesar" from time-to-time as well. Manchester's "Goodbye Darkness" is a very touching autobiography of his life, but focusing on his time as combat Marine in WWII. I enjoy reading other autobiographies of Marines in WWII: Robert Leckie, and Eugene Sledge, for example. However, Manchester adds an intellectual, historical perspective of the war in the Pacific and the battles that he did not participate in.

Never have I read a book that so grippingly, and I assume accurately, conveys the horrors of combat (and that includes Sledge's masterful book on Pelilu). The late Manchester leaves behind him a canon of distinguished non-fiction, one of the gems of which is this memoir. One often wonders how veterans of brutal combat cope with their memories. In this book, the twice-wounded Manchester revisits -- several decades later -- the Pacific Islands where he and his Marines confronted the Japanese: Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Okinawa, etc. His tales of actual combat are gripping and vivid. Did he finally come to terms with his memories? Read it and find out.

This book is a powerful memoir of the gruelling war in the Pacific by a vigorous lively writer. The experiences, the heroism, and the suffering of the men who fought their way up the Pacific from the outskirts of Australia to the outskirts of Japan must never be forgotten, particularly in a contemporary American environment in which volunteer armed forces, a tiny segment of the American population, fight endlessly while the rest of the country drivers bigger and bigger SUVs and fantasizes about Making America Great again, under a Commander in Chief who could not be more removed from what Manchester writes about..

As an Asian-American woman who has the last name Sanders and a mother who grappled with suicide and who also went to Taiwan recently... I randomly learned about this book from a Buzzfeed article and was like uhhh yeah I need to buy this like yesterday!What I liked: This was a great debut by a very promising author and the premise was intriguing to say the least. I stayed up until 1am reading it and finished it the next day, and will be loaning my copy to a couple of friends and family members. I thought the writing was overall strong and clear and engaging. The portrayal of depression and suicide and the stigma that surrounds mental health, especially in Asian-American families, is realistic. I am also a sucker for magical realism.What I am torn on: Eastern mythicism is kind of the backbone of this novel, which is not something I generally love because this is a trope that has been done to death by orientalist authors like Amy Tan, and can often contribute to building an unhealthy exploitative aura of fabricated mystery around people from Asia, painting them as mysterious, superstitious 'others' rather than highlighting our similarities and bridging cultural divides. However, I will say that pretty much all of the religious and cultural elements mentioned in this novel are portrayed accurately, and the perspective of the protagonist does read to be from someone who is genuinely trying to understand the local culture.What I didn't like: The main character's best friend/love interest, Axel, is a boring and uncompelling character; he is basically a male version of her. Yet he is featured prominently in the novel and there is no way to escape him because even when he is not present, her streams of consciousness keep turning to him. The dialogue in general was stilted and unrealistic, and not reflective of how teenagers actually speak. (The characters mostly speak in cliched language reminiscent of the 90s, along the lines of: "Ugh, mo-om!" I sighed, rolling my eyes. "You're being totally annoying!")

“If he looked in my eyes straight on, he would know how he’d pierced me with an arrow, how its shaft was still sticking out of my chest, twitching each time my heart contracted. And maybe he’d see how my mother had sliced up everything else.”This is one of the most beautiful books I’ve ever read in my entire life. It’s powerful, moving, poignant, lyrical, important, and touched me beyond words. From the discussion about mental health and the stigmas we still have in 2018 (especially in Asian cultures), to the true portrayal of grief, to the heartbreaking truth about depression, to the realistic depiction of what it means to be not only biracial but to be white passing, to the discovery of your identity. The Astonishing Color of After is a book I will cherish for the rest of my life.“I would’ve carved out my heart and brain and given them to her just so she could feel right again.”But this is a very heavy book, so big trigger and content warnings for suicide, depression, loss of a loved one, depiction of blood, very intense suicidal thoughts, abandonment, racial slurs/remarks, and mention of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). But if you’re in the right state of mind, I recommend this book with my whole heart and soul. This will easily make my best of 2018 list.The Astonishing Color of After is a story about a girl who has just realized that her mother has committed suicide. This book follows her suffering with the loss of her mother, who she is also seeing in the shape of a bird. This bird has convinced our main character, Leigh, to travel to Taiwan, because there is something there that her mother wants her to remember.“My mother is a bird. This isn’t like some William Faulkner stream-of-consciousness metaphorical crap. My mother. Is literally. A bird.”➽ Mental Health -This is a book about mental health and how depression impacts everyone around the person who is living with it. In the acknowledgements, Emily X.R. Pan states that she was inspired to finish this book after someone close to her took their own life. And I’m not going to say that her experience, or my experience, are the only experiences, but the depiction of depression in this book sends a chill up my spine because it feels so real and accurate.This book discusses how people always think they could have saved the person who ended their life. Or how pills and medications are the fix that depressed people need. Sometimes people believe in other, terrible, treatments that will cure depression, no matter what it costs that person. Depression is an illness, just like anything else. It can come once, it can come and go, and it can come and never leave. But depression is real, and it can be hard, really hard, and it’s not something that’s an “easy fix”, and it’s not something that we should keep stigmatizing and pretending that it’s not a real illness. And this book respectfully and beautiful depicts that. And there is absolutely no suicide shaming in this book.“Long before doctors put a label on her condition and offered slips of paper bearing the multisyllabic names of pharmaceuticals. Long before my father started leaving on his work trips. Long before everything: She was already hurting.”➽ Grief -The start of this book was really heavy and hard to read for me. When Leigh discovers what her mother did my heart felt like it was being shredded. But seeing her mother live with her own grief shredded my soul. Depression, loss, and grief are highlighted themes through this entire book, and they are so real and so important and I have no words to express how much they meant to me that they were huge components of this YA story.“In the beginning, that mother-shaped hole was made of blood. Dark and sticky, soaked to the roots of the carpet.”➽ Discovery -Ultimately, this is a book about Leigh discovering her self in every sense of the word. From discovering her sexuality, to discovering her creativity, to trying to figure out what she wants to do with her life. To also living with a parent that is depressed, to sharing a life with a parent who is never home. To finally discovering her culture that has been somewhat hidden from her for her entire life. Also, this book is the biggest love letter to the healing power of art.“Maybe that’s where all the other colors are hiding—in a dimension of the world we just can’t see, between our sky and the rest of the universe.”➽ Being Biracial -I feel like this is something I never talk about because I feel shame because of all the privileges I’ve received my entire life from being so very white passing, but apparently 2018 is the year I bring up my Filipino heritage in every review I write. I’m a lot more white passing than Leigh, but the things she deals with and feels, especially when she travels to Taiwan, is something so real and something I’ve never had depicted in a book before. From my light hair and eyes, to my barely basic understanding of Tagalog, this book was the book I’ve been searching for my entire life. I have no word combination for how seen I felt in the book. (Also the love interest is half Filipino, and was the cutest little cinnamon role who warmed my heart throughout the book!)“I suck in a deep breath and quicken my steps to press closer to my grandmother. Her proximity feels like a shield. If only I didn’t stand out so obviously with my lighter eyes, with my lighter hair and its streak of green. If only I had been raised more Taiwanese, and could somehow prove to these people that I belong here.”➽ Identity -But seeing Leigh claim back her identity is something so beautiful that I don’t even have words for. This story is crafted and woven so exceptionally between different pasts and her present, and seeing Leigh come into her own is something I can’t possibly put into words.“We try so hard to make these little time capsules. Memories strung up just so, like holiday lights, casting the perfect glow in the perfect tones. But that picking and choosing what to look at, what to put on display—that’s not the true nature of remembering.”Overall, I loved this (if you couldn’t tell)! This, again, is a story that I will carry inside of my heart for the rest of my life. Emily X.R. Pan has crafted something that is so raw, but so magical. Plus, this is one of the most impressive debuts that I’ve ever read in my entire life. I recommend this with my entire heart and soul.
