Actually a pretty good book. As an American I always wondered about CrIcket....an inning that lasts hours, over 100 runs in an inning in a game that could last 3 days with tea breaks???? However after reading this book, I have a much better understanding of the game and why hundreds of millions are fanatics about it. In fact I have watched a few matches since reading this book and can finally understand what is happening on the "wicket" and really enjoy it. This book clearly explains the game, equipment and what is happening during a match. It also discusses some of the greats of the game, the rivalries and the best games ever played. A very interesting book that I can highly recommend. So grab this book and a cup of tea and give the game a chance.

I know a bit about cricket but needed a lot of help to set up a casual game among friends. This book made it easy to measure out and mark the critical areas of the field (i.e., the creases, wicket placement and height). It also presents the rules in an easy to read way. More advanced subject matter, such as game strategy, team selection, qualities of individual fields, captaining a team, umpiring, etc. are included for those who are more familiar with the game and want to hone their skills. There is even a neat chapter on history and famous rivalries. A great book, especially for beginners!

I bought this book to learn about cricket, and the book delivers. I now have a pretty good grasp of the game - and I want to play now too :)The only criticism I can give is that the orgnaization isn't very good if you plan on reading the book from cover to cover in one go. It seems to jump around between rules (laws), history and how to play.It would make a great reference book, and with a physical copy the jumping around probably doesn't matter, but with the kindle edition it makes for an odd read.I would absolutely recommend the book, and I would buy it again.

We learned enough in the first couple of chapters to better understand what we are watching. We will need to study it in detail to become knowledgeable fans.

Very informative but I think it could have been edited better, grammatically and structurally. It's a good read but the mention and then later definition of some information seems misplaced.

This is a good book. However, it is not really a good first book. In fact, it is short on one of the most needed features for the beginner: an exhaustive index of all those nutty terms. Eg. try to find a "Chinaman".Of course, this book has considerable information on many items that are really needed. e.g. the 'how-to' of bowling many of those strange throws.I would suggest reading "Cricket Explained" by Robert Eastaway first. It is shorter and initially more useful. You will also want "Cricket for Dummies" as well. If there is an Amazon special for both - go for it.

While the author attempts to dumb down the rules of the game, it's obvious that the book is written by an Englishman for Britons, or those who have had at least some experience with cricket. (I live in Texas, and the only crickets I know are those noisy bugs or Buddy Holly's band.)Some concepts are never fully explained, while others are covered in minute detail. For example, the batting section goes on and on, with numerous illustrations, while the section on bowling is comparatively brief. We could really use a step-by-step -- with pictures -- examination of the basic bowling process and less on different techniques.Also, the book focuses too much on playing and coaching the game. I'd much rather read more about the history of cricket. The section on cricket controversies and great players is nice, but way too short.Finally, while Mr. Knight's enthusiasm for the game is obvious, alas, his jokes are pretty lame.

This book on Mosaics is a little different and more thorough than others I have read. As a mosaic artist myself I'm always scouring books on the topic and this one is a favorite. The reasons this particular book is good is that it has very detailed outlines on how to create different tasks. In the beginning it outlines all the different types of materials needed and gives comprehensive information on types of tiles and how they are to work with, along with photos, so you can see what they're talking about. It also covers the materials you may work on eg. wood, terracotta, glass, ceramic etc many books overlook the actual surface being used and its hard to find info on matching the correct adhesives to the surfaces being used.I also like the book as it focuses on patterns rather than objects for designs and there are some lovely designs in this book, well illustrated with colour plates and step by step instructions. Overall its a very informative and well rounded book, easy to follow and also gives inspiration.

When Emma Biggs visited my studio last year, I was compelled to find out as much as I could about her mosaic art work. I quickly became enthralled with it and was, subsequently, delighted to discover this book had been published. It is well-written in terms that anyone can understand. The projects are out of the ordinary and are truly spectacular. The illustrations are excellent and portray the step-by-step process in a succinct, complete way.I would recommend this book both to the professional mosaic artist as well as to the layman or anyone who is generally interested in mosaic art.

I was hoping to get some inspiration out of this book, but it fell short for me. The techniques are described just as well if not better in books I have by Bonnie Fitzgerald.

Over the past two years I have been carefully selecting and purchasing books on mosaics to use in the craft. This is by far my favorite book for technique and "how to" ... it has a great variety of materials and applications that can be translated to mosaic designs/projects of your own making/imagination. I would recommend this book for anyone's mosaic library.

This is the same book as "Bobbin Lacemaking" by the same author.The projects are well thought out, but do tend to focus on edgings; I prefer the samplers that make bookmarks, personally.Still, it's a solid set of examples, and really readable, with good context and advice.

This is a really great book for learning to make bobbin lace. It was recommended by a friend who is teaching me bobbin lace, and it's one of the few older books you can still find occasionally. It does call for a 40/2 linen thread especially spun for bobbin lace, which is pretty fine. The author does not care for cotton thread, but that is the most sensible thing to use as a beginner, specifically, a size 20 crochet cotton is very good. The lessons start out very simply and build skills with each new pattern. It is much more than a collection of patterns. The author explains some different types of lace grounds and takes the reader through making each one. The diagrams and writing are very clear and easy to understand. I would recommend this book as a must-have for a beginner.

I love this book!! I knew nothing about Bobbin lacemaking, but I wanted to learn. Very easy to understand and follow! I have done all of the sample pieces and they turned out EXACTLY like the pictures! Bobbin lace is a beautiful art!

I had no idea what I was getting into with this craft. This book opens a whole new world. Instructions are easy to follow. The author learned on her own and has passed on her knowledge in clear and easy to follow instructions. Very helpful & gives me hope that I may actually learn this craft.

Excellent explanations and pictures for beginners. It emphasizes techniques that can be apply later into more complex lacemaking.

I'm enjoying this book very much. Ms. Southard is very clear in her instructions and I'm learning a lot. I have not gotten to the more advanced patterns, but I'm sure she will make it easy.

This turned out to be a thin booklet with 16 pages, not what I expected.Have returned the item and will get my money back.

I have been binge-listening to the RAR podcast and am really enjoying it. Reading aloud to my children was always a given, as I was read to by my parents. Nonetheless, I love to read about reading, particularly to children. This book was slow to start. Part 1 is basically a series of disconnected blog posts, which I find a very frustrating feature of blog-turned-book authors. Part 2 is much more engaging and provides some of the research-backed reasons for reading to your children that I love. And Part 3 is a quite useful booklist. I do wish that the description on both Amazon and on the book itself would make clear that this has a fairly heavy Christian bent. And not just any Christian, but one who would know without explanation what VBS means. (I am a church-going Christian, but had to google it to find out that it refers to Vacation Bible School.) Christianity = Truth, and truth seeking is one of the main reasons to read to your children. I don't think any of the author's followers or fans will be surprised (or disappointed), but I'm sure the hope is that this books reaches readers beyond the podcast, and I think it would be helpful information.

I have been a reading to my kids since they were little, because I love books myself! After connecting with Sarah Mackenzie in her Read-Aloud Revival community a few years ago, I had a clearer picture of why reading aloud is important and what to read. However, her new book covers deeper the why-to-read-aloud and the how-to-make-it-work. It also includes read-aloud book suggestions for different age groups, which are great book lists.I have book darts all through this book, because as the subtitle states I want to be “making meaningful and lasting connections with [my] kids”. I will keep the rest of this review brief, because the book darts are mostly just reminders for me. For example the reminder of the importance of reading aloud at ALL ages, EVEN when our days are busy. I need to actually “steal” time from other areas to make it a priority in my family. I want to build memories and connections with my children through stories now, even if it’s only ten minutes each day. During these times, I want the kids to be inspired by heroes, walk in other’s shoes and have compassion, and learn to think. Also, I simply want them to love stories and dive into books themselves for the rest of their lives! I have followed Sarah MacKenzie for quite some time, and when Teaching from Rest: A Homeschooler's Guide to Unshakable Peacecame out, I devoured it. That book has become a staple for me to reread once a year during my school planning time. I tend to be the type of person that over-thinks and over-complicates pretty much everything. I also joined her Read Aloud Revival site this year (which our family has loved), and often listed to Sarah's podcast. I have often wished there was something that would put together all the information and booklists from the podcasts. Wishes are sometimes granted, and The Read-Aloud Family: Making Meaningful and Lasting Connections with Your Kids does not disappoint.The Read-Aloud Family is broken up into three parts. Part 1 goes through all the pertinent research about the benefits of reading aloud to our children. For all of the times when I wonder if what I'm doing is actually worth anything, I will remember the information gleaned here. The biggest takeaway for me is that reading aloud is the BEST use of my time with my kids. From making ourselves present for our kids in a highly distracted culture, to inspiring virtue and compassion in them (and us!), to encouraging our kids academically, reading aloud does it all.Part 2 is all about practical application. Sarah describes what she calls a "Book Club Culture" at home. She provides us with the right questions to ask about books to encourage deep thought and great conversation. We don't have to be experts on literary analysis to have a good conversation about books. We just have to be able to ask compelling questions. An really valuable part of this book is the chapter on how to pick books for your family, and what makes a good book.Part 3 is the book list. Sarah breaks her book list into four age groups, 0-3, 4-7, 8-12, and the teen years. One of the things I appreciate about this list is that many of the books and authors are newer. Booklists for older books abound (see John Senior's 1000 Good Books), but navigating the world of new books can be tough for busy parents. I don't have time to read everything before my kids get to it, so this list is valuable. I trust Sarah's opinion and through being a "Sarah MacKenzie Groupie" I have found many gems that have become family favorites. Of course Sarah does not discount classic literature, and encourages families to read it in this book. But because lists for newer literature are not as easy to find (and if you do find one, can you be sure it's a good one?) the list in The Read-Aloud Family belongs in every home.I am a bit of a book nerd, so when my husband asked what I was so intent on reading recently, he laughed when I told him I was reading a book about reading books. But Sarah's book is so much more than just a book on reading books. Sarah's book is about building up the family culture while providing an avenue to have wonderful conversations with our children and deepening family bonds.
