I love these piano arrangements for students. They sound great but are on a lower level. Great for recitals.

The reviews on many of these 5 fine books in the Play Hymns series remark that the "harmonies are weird" and "the songs are too easy or too hard." If you look at the whole series, you can see what Melody intended here, and the "strangeness" criticism melts away.First, the first two books transition from raw beginner to advanced (about 6 months in) beginner. As a hymnist, I use these arrangements to teach all three aspects: hymondy, composing and playing. The third through fourth books move from beginner to middle intermediate. However, due to generously supplied accompaniments, advanced students and teacher can also profit greatly from the series.The harmonics are not really "weird," they are simply transpositions that make playing with small/inexperienced fingerings easier while simultaneously creating a unique interpretation of the fully traditional melodies. The general composition is bright, choosing an A minor or C gives a lullaby/berceuse feeling to greensleeves (What Child Is This?), where e minor adds a sadness.Most importantly, the combination of easier fingering with good dynamics and pleasing melodic lines makes even very new players sound good right away, which is wonderfully encouraging to new players, and which gives insight to even seasoned hymnists in the underlying emotion. There are subtle differences between traditional hymns, contemporary and gospel, for example, not only in the lyrics transitioning from praising God to supplicating to telling the story of a relationship (respectively), but also differentiating the chorale aspects between improvised key shifts (as in Gospel) to much more complex motet and full mass choral works by the masters. The accompaniments allow teachers to use the series over and over by "teaching the teacher" at advanced levels, just as a composition teacher will add sophisticated harmonic chords to a new composer's melodic line to demonstrate the advanced possibilities of even simpler melodies.This is a key reason that not only those of us who love and work in hymnody can benefit from this series, but really any piano teacher, since hymns themselves convey deep emotion with surprising simplicity. Highly recommended.

Michael J. Leahy (1901-1979) finally settled in Zenag, New Guinea, and, with his brothers, became a prosperous rancher and respected settler. Douglas E. Jones is Director of the Alabama State Museum of Natural History, which houses an extensive collection of aboriginal artifacts donated by Leahy following his explorations. Jane C. Goodale is Professor of Anthropology at Bryn Mawr College and a specialist on aboriginal New Guinea.

Some years ago, I bought Once Upon a Time, a collection of the society photography of Slim Aarons. I loved that work and had to admire Aarons' working philosophy. After World War II service, he decided "I'm going to have fun photographing attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places". Well, compared to some philosophies people have followed over the last few decades, that one isn't too bad. A few days ago I was reading the Daily Mail and it had a feature on this, a new collection. Amazon had it and an uncle and aunt had recently sent me a gift card, so everything came together quite well. This is another fine book of Aarons' photos. Laura Hawk, who worked as an assistant to Aarons, provides the commentary and gives us a good idea of what it was like to work for the man (he could be charming and brilliant but also demanding and difficult). The cover has one of my favorite Aarons photos; it was also in Once Upon a Time. This volume has additional outtakes and these show just how bad 1970's fashion could be. There are great pictures of royalty, celebrities and the wealthy as well as stories about who these people are and how some of the shots came together. If you like the work of Slim Aarons, you will not be disappointed.

Wonderful. The Slim Aarons estate still seems to have fresh material -- along with some previously published -- to delight us. This is classic Aarons fare and his eye continues to delight after all of these years.Beautiful women in very enjoyable surroundings with, very helpfully, descriptions of who they are or were and what their relationship was with Aarons. Culturally interesting as well as a pleasure to look at.

Laura Hawk is a very good writer. Captivating storyteller. You just want to keep reading about Slim's subjects and ways of getting the shots.
