Sketching from the Imagination is a wonderful 320-page paperback collection of sketches from 50 artists. It's always a delight to look through other people sketches, especially the good ones, and there are plenty to see in this thick volume.The sketches compiled are all drawn from imagination. There are scenes of fantasy, character and creature designs, some location art, sometimes whimsical drawings, loose sketches, detailed sketches, and other amazing line drawings. Majority I would say are still character and creature art. Most of the stuff in the book are good enough as concept art, actually in a sense they all are.I like checking out the different styles and techniques. There are the cartoony stuff, superhero comics style, amazing pencil and pen hatching, shading, use of black, drawing on toned paper and more. Some you can see are done quickly and loose. Some are very elaborate with detailed designs and shading.The artists are featured alphabetically. Each has around 6 pages of coverage with a brief commentary on why they sketch and their inspiration. It's not really an instructional book, more for sparks of inspiration. All the sketches also come with brief captions.I collect a lot of sketchbooks, and I really enjoyed looking through this one.It's an inspiring book for those who like art, and of course sketchbooks, and probably will get you inspired to start sketching.If you like this sketchbook, check out some of the other sketchbooks mentioned in my comment section below.
This is a massive volume of drawings that runs well past the 300 page mark, and are from a plethora of visual artists, including works of everyone from surrealists, illustrators and caricaturists, and a volume that is so varied that practically anyone can find pleasure or insight within its pages. The majority of the images are in black and white, which helps to keep the feel, even when sketched digitally, that these works are unfinished and not end pieces unto themselves. I could go into detail about this or that artist and their sketches, but it would simply show my own artistic prejudices and would deviate from an even-handed review of the book. What I will say is that every artist is given an introduction to talk about their work and process, with little descriptions throughout their sections describing and detailing each image. On this subject there have been some complaints that this book in fact could use more descriptions of the artists and their backgrounds, but realistically you'd never be able to fit it all in a volume already as massive as this one is.My primary, and really only complaint, and one that may make me in the minority, is the fact that, contrary to the actual titular description of this book, many of the sketches are in fact not from the imagination at all, but based on photos, life drawings, ect. Perhaps this seems like a small qualm to some, but to me I believe a book should deliver exactly what it promises; hypothetically if I buy a book titled The Big Cats I don't want to realize while surfacing through the pages that it's actually a book about carnivorous mammals in general; conversely I don't want to buy a book titled Sketching from the Imagination and discover far too many sketches that are clearly based on photos, and are in fact described as such. For those who want a book that actually delivers on imaginative sketches I recommend Sean Andrew Murray's, Sketchbook Collection Vol. 1, which is almost exclusively imaginative, and so is not subject to the photo's limitations, which unfortunately too many of the drawings in this volume clearly are. This isn't to say that all or the full majority of the sketches aren't from the imagination (I hadn't planned on counting them all) but too many are, and so that's why I've given this book the rating I think it deserves, though if Amazon had it I'd instead give it 31/2 stars, but this will have to do.I would recommend this volume for those who want a wide menagerie of artwork to look at and to be inspired by, and though I think it has its drawbacks, namely a largely disingenuous title, I still know that I'd repurchase this item again, particularly for the inspirational energy it continually packs.
I don't normally submit reviews but I felt that this book was a little vague in the description. First off I love 3DTotal and I have all their other books. So when I saw that they were coming out with this book I was excited to finally see a book that would help me with drawing from my imagination. That is fundamentally the problem I have with this book, it is not an instruction book so much as a collection of drawings and some brief insight into how the artists came up with them. I would have much preferred this as an instruction book, which is what I originally thought this was when I bought it and hence the 4 star rating. That being said this is a beautiful book. It is packed full of beautiful drawings that just make you want to pick up a pencil and draw so from an inspiration point of view this is fantastic. If you are buying a book merely for inspiration then you can't go wrong with this and as I said if I had not been looking for an instruction book then this would definitely have gotten 5 stars.
I had pretty high hopes when I ordered this book. I have many other 3d total publications, for example the Digital Masters Series. Sketching from the Imagination is fun to look at, but leaves a bit to be desired in the tutorial area. The tutorial is vague and left me wanting and needing more. It's kind of like trying to watch an animation with only the main key frames and no in-betweens. I think these types of book should definitely include a CD or a web site to view someone teaching the steps.
These books are incredible. I have almost every Sketching From The Imagination title. They serve as a great Kickstarter when I’m feeling creatively blocked, and are an inspirational read otherwise. I highly recommend each and every one of them. I bought this copy for my niece, who loved my copy so much that she needed one of her own.
The book displays a range of fantastical and realistic works by many talented artists. The text complements the sampling of drawings to give a picture of the artists thinking and approach to his or her work. I enjoyed reading about artists that I knew and look forward to searching out more for the artists the book introduced me to.If you enjoy a bit of whimsy, a touch of the sinister, and a lot of humor backed up by serious talent, you will enjoy Sketching from the Imagination.
So glad I bought this book and the others in the series. Highly recommend!
