I read this book many, many moons ago! I loved it then and I love it now. Things from the book came back to me as I read them.Septimus Heap was taken away as a newborn child with the nurse saying he was dead...he was not. He was taken away to turn him into something else. In his place there was left a baby girl that was found by the father, Silas Heap. It's funny this happens right as their baby is taken.... hmmm.. wonder who she is.So the house is full of Heaps and several years later when the secret finally comes out who Jenna really is, she goes on a journey with the ExtraOrdinary Wizard named Marcia, her father Silas, one brother Nicko, Boy 412 (who was a guard to the wizard tower) and the Heap's dog Maxie. They take a precarious trip to their Aunt Zelda in the swamps. It's such a fun book with all of the little magical things like the Shield Bugs, they are so cool and I want a group of them of my own! My favorite was Jenna's pet rock that she named Petroc Trelawney! I want one, actually I have some rocks around here I intend to paint different colors with little faces. I doubt they will come to life it I pet them though :( I love their Boggart friend too. There are just so many things to like about this book. They have to face a bunch of junk trying to keep away from the bad guys that just want to get Jenna back. They find out some things they never knew. They learn spells and mostly have a good time. It's a great book!MY REVIEWS:www.melissa413readsalot.blogspot.comhttps://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1308679508

If you want to read a new series with great thrills, I recommend the Septimus Heap Series by Angie Sage. In the seven books in the series, you will go on quests you have never dreamed of with charms, spells, magyk, and wizards. I recommend this to anyone who likes fantasy, Harry Potter, and other books along those lines.“Magyk,” book one in the Septimus Heap Series, is a great book for any young reader. If you like the Harry Potter series, you will love the Septimus Heap Series. This book takes you on an adventurous journey from the castle, into the woods, and over great marshes. I recommend this for any reader, young or old. It is such a great page-turning book; you will encounter things you never thought you would. Magyk has been the best series starter I have ever read.

Septimus Heap is the first book in a series of seven. I am just reading the seventh book. Magyk had me hooked immediately and I've quickly bought each book thereafter. There are unique characters and the plot is fresh. I immediately like the main characters and they have been well-developed through the series. Angie Sage has created a new "world" that is filled with different takes on magic and creatures.

I purchased this reprinted paperback because it contains the elusive Darke Toad. Thanks to author Angie Sage for mentioning in her blog that Darke Toad is part of this reprint. Now I have a printed copy!My only disappointment is that this paperback edition is newsprint. Very poor quality compared to the original hardcover. But, it contains the Darke Toad, so I should not complain.Five stars for having the Darke Toad!

My daughter is 7, so, she's young, but she loves me to read chapter books to her. She loves the first few Harry Potters and the first couple books of Fablehaven (too scary now, the rest will have to wait until she's older) and she loves the Spiderwick Chronicles. I was hoping for so much more with this series. Unforunately it's been too slow to get started, not enough magic and I think the writing style is a bit hard for her to understand. It's not really plain and to the point. So, not yet half way through we have stopped reading. I will try and convince her to keep going because I can see so many people have loved these books...but so far, it is rated a 2 for us.***edited 10-11-12*** I have convinced my daughter to keep reading and now we are at the half-way point...it seems to be getting more interesting and more magykal. I have changed my previous review from 2 to 3. But, I am not sure due to the extremely slow start if I will change my review from here. It will take this book becoming seriously amazing to change it at this point. I will keep you posted.

My son's first chapter book was The Hobbit, and we "read" The Lord of the Rings before he was really reading very well by himself. He loves "dark" fantasy. I put "dark" in quotes, because I think if there were ever really any doubt that the protagonist of a book might not be okay, I think he'd have a hard time with it - at least reading it on his own. Magyk has the same epic journey feel as the Lord of the Rings, but the vocabulary and the themes are more in line with a 9 year old's comprehension levels. There are fantastic characters - Boggarts and Magogs and talking rats, ghosts, wizards, and witches - a princess to save, and even a ring. The story lacks a bit of the richness of scenic detail found in similar books, such as the Underland Chronicles and, of course, the Tolkien books, but the characterizations are utterly charming, and the plot is dramatic and well-paced. I recommend this series for young readers who do not scare easily and who have a firm grasp on the concept of fantasy (there is some death and much talk of shooting) as well as for older readers who like the Harry Potter and Tolkien books. The vocabulary sits about at a fourth grade or fifth grade level, but some readers that young may not be ready to read about a heroine whose mother was murdered (with the murder described).

This is definitely the weakest of Chelsea Handler's books currently released books, and it's also a bit different. There aren't many tales of Chelsea's sexual exploits. Instead, UGANDA BE KIDDING ME is comprised of tales of Chelsea's traveling "adventures," starting with her safari trips in Africa (hence the title). Unfortunately, most of the tales, while amusing, weren't really that funny to me. She demonstrates how clueless she is and some stupid predicaments she gets into the more privileged she gets. Instead of cheering her on (like in the previous novels), I wanted to tell her to grow up. Sadly, I don't think I laughed out loud at Chelsea's musings once (unlike her friend Heather McDonald's latest). Ironically, I *did* LOL at her friend "Schmitney Schummings'" observations about Chelsea in UGANDA.If you're a big Chelsea Handler fan, it's worth a read, but if not, this isn't the book to start with.P.S. I'd also like to point out that the publisher, Grand Central Publishing, has some pretty crappy editors on staff. I noticed lots of typos, double (repeated) paragraphs, etc. in the hardcover 1st edition. This is your best work? Seriously? Uganda be kidding me.

This book is essentially a smattering of random life events with about half the book themed with travel. I found her honesty about herself and her friends and family really refreshing because honestly, as crazy as she may seem, she has a level of awareness that is strangely refreshing. What I found interesting is that maybe the anecdotal parts of the stories were embellished or exaggerated for effect, but ironically often in a way that would make her appear worse or more at fault for her transgressions. I mention this because there were differences from these stories in the book to on her standup special and in interviews. Chelsea Handler has a way of allowing you into her mind and her thought process which again is pretty ironic when compared to her stories of being such a liar as a child and even now. Ultimately it was interesting reading about a fairly eccentric person who is obviously trying to do more for herself and seems to have a very generous spirit and nostalgic and kind heart. Her sharp and biting remarks or sarcastic quips are a stark comparison to her extreme closeness with her friends and strong emotional ties with her sister. If it sounds as though I'm reviewing the author and not the book, that's because in this case I think they're synonymous. You really get a glimpse into how a very unique person's mind works.

Let me start by saying that I am a huge Chelsea Handler fan, and have been for years. I bought this book with excitement, and I was not disappointed. Her style is raw and funny, and she doesn't mince words. I usually take three or so weeks (reading in the evenings for a short time) to read a book, I'm pretty sure this was completely finished in three days. Her travels to Africa make a great backdrop for her shenanigans, and it was interesting to get to know a bit more about her real life friends. I hope she will come out with another book soon.

I love, love, love Chelsea as a person. But some of the stories are a bit contrived and unbelievable. Despite her self depreciating humor it is obvious that she is not an idiot. I also just didn't find myself laughing at much of this book. It was also a bit weird that this book was 90% Africa vacations and 10% other traveling. It just seemed disjointed. The writing is weak, but I do think that is because Chelsea actually writes her books, so I'll give her props for that. If not, she needs to fire her ghost writer because dang, it's bad.My biggest pet peeve is the editing. There were unforgivable mistakes. For example, there are two paragraphs in a row that are the same. Just a read-through should have caught that -- no editing skills would be needed! I have worked in publishing and I get that mistakes slip through. But there were so many horrible ones that I found it distracting.

The least interesting of Chelsea’s books. Quite honestly I found myself bored. Her sense of humor has gotten a little stale and it’s kind of sad to see a woman her age acting so foolishly and be so proud of it. If you’re looking to capture the magic of her early books you’ll be disappointed.

Chelsea wrote another funny book that focuses on her travels around the world. Her stories are hit and miss in that some of them are hilarious, while others are just mildly entertaining. I bought a copy of the first printing and there were major editing errors. One of the most notable was two identical paragraphs right next to each other and then of course several spelling errors and other common things that should have been spotted. I would hope that in the later editions these have been corrected.

She is hilarious! Great summertime/vacation read. I liked a couple of her other books better, (My Horizontal Life and Are You There Vodka? It's Me Chelsea) but this one was funny too, especially if you like to travel. I honestly think her books are funnier than she is in person, because they explain some of the expressions she gets on her face etc.

I've read some of her other books while on vacation relaxing pool side and they were pretty funny. This particular book was good up until half way. I thought this book was going to be more about her trip to Africa, since I've never been I thought it would be interesting. She really only talks about her trip for half of the book. It's her usual story about dragging her friends on a trip, them getting drunk, making fun of each other and trying to get laid. If you've read any of her other books then you've pretty much read this one too just add some wild animals.

Very few 5 stars ratings, but EVERYONE should read/study this book! (a few too many sports metaphors and analogies, but that's his point of reference). A truly un-common man, in today's world of weak, and low character population. I needed to hear, re-hear everything in this book. Its so nice to see someone who recognizes the value God put in their parents, and be honestly grateful for it! Thanks, Tony, really appreciate your input through this book, and through your radio messages. Edify! Thanks again, Dave (in Colorado)

Every young man and older man should read this book and take this challenge to be uncommon...workbook and devotional book is great too based on this one...highly recommend!

I recall being in a staff meeting some years ago and the team leader mentioned mentioned. I blurted out, who is Tony Dungy? fortunately no one looked at me like I was the idiot I felt like, after I discovered who Tony Dungy is. Since that time I set out to find out more about him and now I have bought his books. I must say that they are remarkable. Truly outstanding reads. I really like the fact that he is a Christian. His books share such good information for everyone from sports fan, Christian book readers, and the casual reader. My husband who rarely reads anything not involved with his job, says he is going to read these books. This is an absolutely great read! Thanks Mr. Dungy!!!

Can't go wrong with a Tony Dungy book. Inspiring and true to like examples. Great gift.

Bought 1 for my husband last year for Christmas and he enjoyed it. Bought my brother the daily challenge and he found my husband's book at our house and wanted to complete the set! If you want to make a true football fan happy, give them one of Tony Dungy' books. Very positive role model!

Great book for family.

When I first read Uncommon, I knew it was the perfect book for my students: young men I teach English to in prison on the island of Trinidad. I hoped they would feel that this book was as special as I thought it was. They were blown away. They couldn't wait to get the Uncommon Daily Challenge by Dungy as well. Uncommon has become a guide for their lives. Every week my students are excited to tell me something they realize about their lives because of Uncommon. Their dream is to meet Coach Dungy some day.

As a woman reading this book, I found that it was geared towards men. I didn't realize this until I started reading it, but I'm glad I finished it. It's so important for our youth today to have positive male role models and great dads in the home. Unfortunately, many of our youth no longer have this.Dungy shares stories of role models he had in his life and the influence his dad made on him. It was the combination of the male role models and both of his parents that made a difference in his life. Anyone can be a positive role model to our young men today, and Dungy challenges men to do just that. Excellent challenge and principles to live by.
