This is an excellent book that can rescue a marriage if the directions are followed. This is one smart man. I have given this book to many people whose marriage are in trouble because of infidelity and it has rescued several of them.
Dobson's opening chapter sets the stage for a very important aspect of healthy relationships. One does not have to be a doormat to those he or she loves. He lays out a plan for expressing your love while making it known that you will not tolerate being stepped on. Various chapters relate to how this would work if your mate is having an affair, addicted to work, etc. It is an excellent book that I often recommend.
Interesting to read things from this perspective. I will say that Dr. Dobson's approach has helped me get through a difficult time in my marriage. Things still aren't where I would like them to be, but I see how this works.
This is a great book, but don't expect it to work like a charm. I highly recommend this book for anyone whose spouse has told them, "I don't love you anymore and I am not sure I ever did." I employed the techniques in this book and my wife still left, but I do have my dignity as Dobson says.
I bought two copies one for a coworker who's going through marriage troubles, but if it's anything like Dr. Dobson's original "Love must be Tough" it is sure way to help persons with codependency and bad relational patters to take notice and get help.
I am 60 pages deep and the book is Ok but i notice its alot of rambling. Almost like the author had to use as many words as possible so its extremely redundant. It has given some good information but i dont like when things drag out - just get to the point and this book is not one of them. It drags on so much you almost forget what topic its even referring to. Hoping i can finish it! I also found a few typos and misspelled words which is odd?
This book is aimed at spouses trying to save thier marriage when their partner wants out. The advice is counterintuitive but based on James Dobson's many years of marriage counselling. My wife left me out of the blue, and I was in shock. I did a lot of the things the author advises against - begging, pleading, appeasement, etc. These strategies do not work because the escaping spouse already disrespects you, and this kind of behavior just makes it worse. What you need to do is to get your dignity back - perhaps by deciding that you are prepared to move on with your life alone, while leaving the door open for reconciliation. Dr Dobson's observations have been a great comfort to me, even though it has been a real struggle at times to implement his suggestions. I would also recommend The Divorce Remedy: The Proven 7-Step Program for Saving Your Marriage for spouses unilaterally trying to save their marriage (as opposed to the spouse trying to unilaterally destroy the marriage).
Even if you are not religious, this book offers advice you would not typically hear from a relationship counselor. Rule #1: Do not let your partner know you are reading this book! It provides insight to extremely difficult situations that gave me confidence to change direction in my own life.
