In 1968, the Bob Hope show visited my hospital in Viet-Nam. We boys lusted after the younger women, in the very short skirts, but promptly forgot them when the show left. But one amazing, older woman captured all our hearts. She sat on our laps and whispered unspeakable things in our ears, she climbed into bed with our wounded patients. She wore a long, very beautiful, silk (?) sarong showing little of her. We was joy, she was life, she was high spirit, she was every man's "Auntie Mame." We never forgot her: Gypsy Rose Lee's - one of the earliest feminists - photo adorns my desk to this day.

Gypsy Rose Lee had a remarkable extraordinary life. She and her sister, June Havoc, spent their childhood entertaining across the country with their very determined mother and her boyfriend, Gordon Gladstone. She was born Rose Louise in Seattle, Washington. Her mother had began their entertainment careers by playing lodge halls in the city with their grandfather at the piano. The book inspired the musical, "Gypsy," which was a great vehicle for Ethel Merman as the mother, Mama Rose. They played all across the country on the Orpheum circuit. Gypsy covers about everything in great detail. She writes about the early days in cheap hotels and the acts which included her sister June and the boys. Mama Rose almost lost custody when the courts demanded her daughters to be educated by a tutor. When June left the act, Louise stepped up and became the center of the act and her mother's attention. Louise remained a loyal daughter but you couldn't blame June. Mama Rose had prevented June from a becoming a trained actress with all expenses paid in New York City rather than lose her. June was smart enough to leave the act for her own survival. She and her then husband participated in dance marathon contests throughout the country. There are parts of the book that shed truth to the musical version, "Gypsy," and some whitewashing too. I believe Louise went into Burlesque with an open mind and knew what she was doing. She would become a big star and a household name. Louise was smart enough to take the opportunity since she was raised with little education in the first place. Her mother traveled with her for a long time. There are plenty of pictures in this book and even illustrated cartoons to show Gypsy's influence in pop culture history. This edition comes with a prologue and epilogue by her only child, son Erik Lee Preminger, (father was film director Otto Preminger). Gypsy writes mostly about the past. She doesn't talk much about her personal relationships with men or her marriages. She died at only 59 years old in Los Angeles, California. June would live well into her nineties and outlive her only daughter.

If you know the musical GYPSY or love show business history, this book is a fun read. Gypsy Rose Lee turns out to be quite a good writer, for she paints a vivid picture of life in the Vaudeville era as well as the Burlesque Theater where she made her name. The book is also filled with photographs of her childhood years on the stage and the many colorful people in her life.

Gypsy Rose Lee was a beautiful and spirited woman and her memoir provides the reader with a fascinating glimpse into the rough and tumble glory days of American vaudeville. The reader is literally taken on the road with Gypsy, or Louise Hovick, her demanding, neurotic stage mother, Mama Rose, and precocious younger sister, Baby June,(who later became actress June Havoc) as they crisscross America with a troupe of young boys in a quest for stardom on the stages of the vaudeville theater circuit. Louise, the older, more neglected sister, "an ugly duckling" compared to her more popular sister, becomes the focus of her domineering mother's attention after the much put upon Baby June elopes with a boy from the show troupe at the tender age of thirteen. It is not the dream of Mama Rose for Louise to become a stripper, but the age of vaudeville has ended abruptly with the coming of talking motion pictures and live burlesque shows are all the rage. Mama Rose realizes for the first time that taken out of her sister's shadow, Louise is a natural performer. Thus, the ugly duckling emerges as a truly beautiful swan and the legend of Gypsy Rose Lee was born. Personally, I found this book hard to put down. Gypsy's life story could easily be described as "Aunt Mame In A G-String." She would make an interesting next door neighbor.
