After attending one of those "free luncheon" seminars I thought it best to know a little more about what we would need (and what to pay for) before signing up with our local Estate Planning Specialist. This book, AARP's Crash Course in Estate Planning, armed me with enough knowledge to speak intelligently with the attorney and know if she was trying to sell us something we didn't need or want. She did not. After all, it's very easy for a law firm to "fill in the blanks" of a computer program and have it burp out all sorts of documents. But the ease of doing that is not relative to the cost of those services. And having a moderately easy to understand explanation of what we have is much better than reading all the where-as's and who-fore's of the actual documents. One thing it taught me, for sure, I'd have been better off buying this book before buying that $40 DIY computer Will program.
I found this book to be extremely helpful in discussing the essential elements of estate planning-powers of attorney, wills and trusts among the basics. The writing is clear, the choices to be made outlined and the advantages and disadvantages to various ways of doing estate planning are made clear.tLegal distinctions are made comprehensible in layman's language, and potential problems and their remedies are clearly presented.One should read this book or one like it before consulting a lawyer, estate planner or financial advisor about estate matters. The book will greatly help you clarify what you want to do and how best to do it, giving you a base line to compare to the advice you may get from others

I'm reading this to prepare for my retirement in 3 years. It's helping guide me through the Estate Planning process. I like this book because of it's ease of reading and plan language.
Save legal fees by educating yourself before you are on the clock. Know the language and the basics. Know what questions to ask to make your time productive.
Good book but VERY OLD; so out of date that much of it no longer applies. Buy the NOLO text: up to date with more detail.
Purchased this book initially due to the Ric Edelman connection however, am halfway through it and am very pleased with the information provided. It is easy to read, easy to understand, and uncomplicates a very complex problem in long term financial planning. I've learned more from only reading half of this book than I've learned from most of the financial magazines and estate planning websites that I've studied/visited. Kudo's to Mr. Palermo and Mr. Edelman for an outstanding publication!
I found so much goodness in this book that I bought multiple copies to give to family members. Everyone should read this book to help them prepare their finances for an easy transition for loved ones.
