I am a little biased, of course, but I would like to say that Artech House did a wonderful job with this newly revised edition of what it calls a "timeless classic." The new book, published this month, contains a new chapter on what I call "virtual experimentation," i.e. computerized optical ray tracing. Also added are updated references and expanded descriptions, additional figures, and more worked examples.It would make a great textbook for a one-quarter or one-semester college course on the subject. Also offers a great way for students needing a better understanding of the subject to bone up without having to take a full course on optical engineering to learn the basics and how to solve simple problems. This applies also to established professionals in a variety of fields needing to work with light and other electromagnetic radiation, including in areas such as:* electric and dayligthing systems design* optical oceanography* chemistry (electroluminescence, UV spectroscopy, atomic spectra, etc.)* night vision system design* security system design* astronomy* light scattering studies* biological responses to solar radiation and daylight* biological responses to light from other sources, such as other organisms emitting light and other e-m radiationIf you can get an excerpt from the publisher, I think you'll find it written in a very straightforward way, presenting the essence of the field using simple concepts and not-too-complicated equations, at least through most of the early chapters.
