My middle school readers love this interactive book. The primary source photos and documents bring out the realities of the events.It is easy enough to read and creates invigorating discussions.
This is a great book for students to learn there are different outcomes for all choices you have in life. Students will learn a lot of history while enjoying a good book.
*Definitely recommend, with supervision*My niece and nephew, aged 9 and 8 respectively, were reading this book the other day after checking it out from their elementary school library. I really think it is a great concept--to teach about historical events and social issues in an interactive manner. However, I found it unsettling that there was no note to educators or parents about the intensity of some of the situations contained within the text. The text gives explicit detail about acts of violence the Civil Rights activists faced, which is certainly relevant; however, if educators and/or parents are not aware of these details or are unprepared to discuss them then their child-reader may not get as much from this text as they otherwise might. If educators/parents are able to read this text with the child-reader--to answer questions, and to help contextualize the subject--then this is a fantastic learning tool. I am not sure that, without adult supervision, this text is appropriate for readers under 12 year old. I love the concept the publishers are going for, and with a clear note to educators/parents, I would give this book a 5-star rating. I urge adult supervision and interaction with the child-reader in order to make the most of this text and the events it details.
