No Good Alternative: Volume Two of Carbon Ideologies

Review

Praise for No Good Alternative:“Carbon Ideologies is an almanac of global energy use . . . a travelogue to natural landscapes riven by energy production . . . a compassionate work of anthropology that tries to make sense of man’s inability to weigh future cataclysm against short-term comfort . . . one of the most honest books yet written on climate change.” —Nathaniel Rich, The Atlantic“In the face of complex, contested data, Vollmann is a diligent and perceptive guide. He’s also deeply mindful of those who’ve been sacrificed in the name of profits and political expediency. Amid the Trump administration’s rollbacks of environment protections, these are incontestably important books.” —The San Francisco Chronicle“Vollmann’s many fans . . . will not be disappointed . . . he packs research and voice into his impassioned works . . . Reading these two books did have an effect on me; I became even more conscious of the resources I waste in my own life.” —John Schwartz, The New York Times Book Review“One of the enjoyable things about this massive work is the way Vollmann employs irony, and that bluntest of irony called sarcasm, throughout the volume. He can be quite humorous. You might even call this the Infinite Jest of climate books . . . there’s something admirable, even noble, about the sheer time and effort—and sheer humanity—that went into these volumes.” —The Baffler“Equal parts gonzo journalism, hand-wringing confessional, and one hot mess . . . the books document Vollmann’s quest to understand how capitalism, consumerism, and fossil fuels are ruining the planet.” —Sierra“The best part of the books [are] the conversations Vollmann had during his travels, the sensitive histories he gives of the places he visited, and the moral impressions those conversations and places have made on him. It’s these parts that made Carbon Ideologies a unique, lasting, definitive contribution to the global warming literature.” —The Humanist“An elegy to our damned epoch that’s also a work of enlightenment and education . . . the book is a performance of the vexations involved in trying to understand our energy reality . . . [Vollmann’s] project—not unlike that of his historical fiction—is to show with utmost fidelity what it was like to be a human involved in terrible things.” —The Los Angeles Review of Books“Vollmann portrays individuals who have endured intimidation to speak out against the ‘callous villainies’ of fuel corporations.  Unflinching, exacting, and forthright, he brings abiding respect, empathy, and tenderness to this endeavor . . .  Invaluable, enlightening, and heartrending testimony to how enmeshed we all are in the carbon-industrial complex and accelerated climate change.” —ALA Booklist

This book's title NO GOOD ALTERNATIVE says it all when contemplating our dependence on fossil fuels for social stability and economic forecasts. On page 22 of this second of two manuscripts by author William T. Vollman it is stated that one pound of coal energy would produce the ...useful work of one horse for one day. This profundity of expression would seemingly shame alternative energy sources into irrelevance.Countless tragedies, warnings, and fetid officials can be found in arcane soirees where gatherings ruminate about abundant opportunities among the unsuspecting as expressed on page 215: "We never were told how outsiders cheated ignorant hill folk out of their mineral rights or about the 1921 Battle of Blair Mountain, pitting thirteen thousand striking coal miners against police and National Guardsmen armed with tanks, machine guns and biplanes."As the author writes on p217 global coal comprised 29% of energy production in 2011. Chinese coal is the world's largest single source of carbon emissions. Energy consumption in India doubled between 1990 and 2012; the nation's per capita consumption is one-third of the global average. Each year two million Bangladeshi' children perish from waterborne disease. In1990 planet earth was burning 9,240,000 tons of petroleum daily. The earth's populace is some where near 5% of the total; of every four barrels of oil in existence America used one. In 2004 America produced 255 million passenger car tires with a side order of 71 million tons of CO2. Coloradans dispose of a million gallons of used motor oil each year; one quart can pollute 250,000 gallons of water. In the book's final pages author Vollman highlights some dramatic 2016 newsprints. The rivers were drying in California, the pine trees dying in Montana. ...evidence from Alaska suggest that fires are at their worst in 10,000 years. Rainfall and flooding in Paris and Germany linked to global warming. Storm-drenched Louisiana in deadly record breaking flooding. Fish parasite deadly as thousands of dead fish litter river. Hot temperatures plus more fierce and frequent droughts force food scarcity African's impoverished into dependent victims.Finally. some observers anticipate the fulfillment of the Trump campaign promises "to have the most devastating consequences of global warming".

The works of William T. Vollmann, each of them, every one of them, by virtue of his unsurpassed graphomania, his mega-documentarian focus on the infinite infinitesmal, the integral voices of the oppressed in his immersions of true life exploitation in fiction throughout his San Franciscan underworld mythologies, The Royal Family, Whores For Gloria, The Rainbow Stories, et al, and the non-fictional Afghanistan Picture Show, Imperial, and now in his two-volume treatise on Carbon Ideologies, 1st volume of which, No Immediate Danger, covers comprehensively every calculation of cost and environmental impact of every carbon and alternative-based energy generation, and particularly on the aftermath of the Fukushima reactor and earthquake disaster, the 2nd volume of which, No Good Alternative, covers coal, natural gas, oil and renewables; the traversal of each of his works by their very density, obsession, thoroughness, integrity and rapture become rites of passage, periods of one's life you realize William has devoted selflessly and obsessively to create a fraction of humanity, of reality, that no one writing today has a commensurate ability or vision.Vollmann refers to himself herein as 'when I was alive', addressing a scant population in the earth-ruined near future; how they will judge us, whether they will even receive and read vestiges of sopping-wet pages or roasted leaves.I'm sure I'm the only person I know (lie, I had a couple of ecstatic evenings with Larry McCaffery) who's read everything in print by Vollmann. I'm sure I'll be the only one in my close acquaintance to read Carbon Ideologies. I can only tell you that, in years to come, and even to generations who may or may not be able to hear us where they are, this is the urtext of climate change, and anyone interested in the calculus, human and otherwise, should read these volumes.

A book of staggering research. Vollmann explores humanity's greatest crisis--our dependence on the fossil fuels that are destroying us. He describes the catastrophic effects of exploitative industrial practices while never losing respect for the human beings who work in those industries. As always, Vollmann's deep compassion permeates his damning revelations. A book about our times for all times.

Probably brilliant, probably important, but unreadable. Could someone please edit this?

Journalism extraordinary. Science based but definitely from the heart and soul.

Volumes of real life encounters of real people living through the major events central to what/where we get our energy/power that make today’s lives possible.

My family is in this book.
