While some seem to feel Hellboy in Hell is the apex of the series, for me it is this third omnibus arc of Hellboy's travels in Russia. Having once earned the hatred of the Baba Yaga (Russia's mythical witch), Hellboy is magically drawn to her homeland and relentlessly pursued by her forces. Not only does the omnibus include Hellboy's adventures in Russia alongside many Eastern European myths and creatures (such as the titular Wild Hunt who invite him to help them hunt giants), Hellboy goes up against one of his coolest enemies in Koshchei the Deathless (a literally unkillable warrior who can come back from any injury). The book also sees the final battle between Hellboy and the Great Dragon of prophecy that he's been tied to since his "birth" back during Rasputin's seance. The story is bombastic and over the top (as all good Hellboy stories can be) and ends with a fitting and tragic end for the character that leads directly into his travels into Hell with the equally strong Hellboy in Hell omnibus.
Hellboy, the blue collar hero, who really didn't want the job, faces a lot in this volume. Many trials are before him... But i can say no more because the slightest spoiler will bring all down.
A gift which was happily received.
The omnibus collection is a great value for the money. The issues look even better than when they were originally published. Highly recommended.
I dont know if its shipping or where the book is stored. but my came all dinged up on the sides. I know they worth much but I like my books new. I have all 3 and the short stories and they all came like that.
And thus ends Hellboy's story. It was epic. It was fun. It was tragic. It gave me everything I wanted and more that I didn't even know I needed. Mignola is a master of mixing the world's folklore into a brand new tale with its own mythology. If you've never read Hellboy, you're doing yourself a real disservice. He's grown into one of my all-time favorite characters over the last 25 years.Duncan Fegredo steps in on art for these last 3 arcs. His art is a more technical version of Mignola's with fewer shadows. If we can't have Mignola, Fegredo is a fantastic fill-in.
Fantastic, perfectly compiled so I can read them in order. Great for any collector or new reader.
